Specific Visualizations Topics
Table
The table visualization works much like any other table you might be familiar with. It presents the data as a table of rows and columns, and is used to see details and compare values.
Text Area
The text area is where you can provide analysis information such as the purpose of a page, or maybe state the observations you have made so that other people can verify or comment on your findings. You can also add images, links, and buttons, which can initiate actions that you think might be helpful for other users who open your analysis.
Bar Chart
A bar chart is a way of summarizing a set of categorical data (continuous data can be made categorical by auto-binning). It displays data using a number of bars, each representing a particular category and with the height of each bar proportional to a specific aggregation.
Waterfall Chart
A waterfall chart shows how a value changes after being affected by various factors that either increase the value, or decrease it. It is commonly used in financial analysis, but also useful for other use cases when you need to show how different component factors contribute to a final result.
Line Chart
Line charts are ideal for showing trends over time. They emphasize time flow and rate of change rather than the amount of change. Line charts make it very easy to visualize data over time but there are some more advanced scenarios where some tips and tricks may be needed.
- Visualize data in a line chart where the line color changes based on a primary measure or another column
- Line chart with vertical lines
- Configure log scales grid lines
Scatter Plot
Scatter plots are used to plot data points on a horizontal and a vertical axis in the attempt to show how much one variable is affected by another. A third variable can be set to correspond to the color or size of the markers, thus adding yet another dimension to the plot.
- Binning and color schemes example
- Find and extract inflection point of fitted lines
- Label top N specific markers in a map or scatter
- Density of data point over time
Map Chart
Map chart allows you to position data in a context, often geographical, using different layers. The layers can be either data layers, such as marker layers or feature layers, or reference layers such as map layers, Web Map Service layers (WMS), or image layers. Map chart is incredibly flexible and has is own section. Learn more from the Location Analytics wiki page.
KPI Chart
The KPI (Key Performance Indicators) chart is used to give information about the current performance of a company or organization. A KPI chart is an effective way of presenting numbers, comparative values, and status of KPIs, on mobile, web, or desktop Spotfire applications.
- KPIs on your mobile device
- Monitor business KPIs on your mobile
- Market category KPIs
- Store department staffing
- Summer lake temperature
- Drill-down inside a KPI chart
Pareto Chart
Pareto chart contains both bars and a line graph, where individual values are represented in descending order by bars, and the cumulative total is represented by the line.
Beeswarm Plot
Beeswarm plots are great to show both the overall distribution of a variable and the individual data points.
Gantt Chart
Gantt chart is a graphical representation of the tasks or activities along with resources required to complete a job or project. It is used to show ranges of start and end dates of activities or tasks and the relationships between them so as to pinpoint bottlenecks and assign priorities. This visualization is available for Spotfire® 11.4 LTS and later from the Spotfire Community Exchange.
Donut Chart
Donut charts are identical to Pie charts with the exception of a blank center used to display additional, related data. This visualization is available for Spotfire® 11.4 LTS and later from the Spotfire Community Exchange.
Custom Visualizations
Visualization Mods
Spotfire® 11 introduces a concept called "Mods"; a lightweight, cloud-ready extension framework, that gives you the ability to rapidly build shareable, reusable components that add new functionality to Spotfire and can tailor Spotfire applications to any industry and any role. Click here to learn how to create your own visualizations using the Spotfire Mods framework and JavaScript chart libraries such as D3, Highcharts, Google Charts, ZoomCharts and others.
JSViz
For Spotfire versions that do not support Mods, the JavaScript Visualization Framework (JSViz) is a custom extension for Spotfire® that allows users to create their own visualizations using JavaScript libraries such as d3 but still allows them to seamlessly integrate with the Spotfire platform. Embedding Visualizations
You can embed Spotfire visualization in a website using the JavaScript API. Click here to learn about using the Spotfire® JavaScript API.
