How do I fix/retain the color scheme associated with a KPI Chart

The column driving the color for my KPI Chart is a custom expression with some associated color rules; the color scheme has been saved as a Document Color Scheme. The custom expression uses multiple columns from the table and is returning values unique to the custom expression. When I rerun the report / refresh the data table, the color scheme resets. Is there a way to retain the color scheme associated with the KPI

If Color scheme is based on unique values and applied to values only, it will reset if column values are changed after data table refresh.
