How to stop the HTML text area from refreshing

I have a text area with a custom radio button and some lists. When I press a radio button a combiation of JS and ipython scripts are activated.

When I select an elementon a list in the same text area as the radio button, the HTML page refreshes and the radio button goes back to the default position.

How can I stop this from happening
