We do not currently support grid data in map charts. I would invite you to submit this suggestion to our Ideas Portal here:

Our Product Management team uses this site to determine what features and functionality to add to future versions of the program.

As for converting to a different format, I'm not sure what would work best for this application. We can import ESRI shapefiles, we can support SDO_GEOMETRY data type from various data sources, some users take advantage of WMS layers from a program like ArcGIS.
