    Well Log Mod for Spotfire®

The Well Log Chart Mod allows you to visualize the well log data. Well logs are gathered from geologic formations penetrated by a borehole but can be used to visualize any other type of data of this nature.

Well Logs are commonly used in the Oil & Gas industry to display measurements over the depth of one or more physical quantities in or around a well. These measurements typically contain electrical measurements such as resistivity, porosity attributes, and lithology values like gamma ray radiation encountered in a rock formation.

    How to open the mod

    1. Open Spotfire® Analyst, and create an analysis by loading some data.
    2. Download the .mod from the Exchange page and drag the file into the analysis
    3. The visualization mod is added to the analysis.

For general information on how to use and share visualization mods, you can read the Spotfire documentation.

    Data requirement

Every mod handles missing, corrupted and/or inconsistent data in different ways. It is advised to always review how the data is visualized.

To make the Well Log Chart work properly, the underlying data must be formatted in a long and skinny format. In other words, data must be unpivoted for the Mod to work properly.

The minimum number of columns for this mod to work are 3: Depth, Category, and ValueWell is optional and has no effect on the Mod other than filtering the data. The names of the columns can be different, but it is important to have the correct data type; Depth for the vertical axis only accepts numbers. The Category represents the measurement name (Gamma Ray, Caliper, Resistivity, etc.) and the value is the value of the measurement. The value column should be a numerical data type.

Setting up the Well Log Mod

It is common for these types of well logs to have one column per measure, but it can be easily unpivoted by adding a transformation to have all measurements in a single column. In this case, it is Category. From the main menu choose Data and then Transform data... Then select the Unpivot transformation and click the Insert button. Select the columns to transform (all measures with the same data type except depth) and pass through the rest.

    Configuring the Well Log Mod

The well log mod has 3 axis to setup; Depth, Category, and Value. Use the selectors to map each axis accordingly. Do not use any aggregation for the Depth. You should see a black dotted vertical line representing a measure. Use the top right gear to see the configuration options.

History about the Well Log Mod

The original Well Log Mod was developed by Justin Gosses called Wellio-viz.js. ported it to Spotfire using JSViz. JSViz is a custom spotfire extension available since version 7.5. After a while, it was ported again as a Spotfire Mod Visualization after introduced Mods on version 11.
