Setting Color by for a Map Layer from Property Control Drop Down

I have a Map Layer that I would like to color by different columns from a property control drop down. From the drop down some columns need to have an axis mode of Continuous and some need to be Categorical I cant seem to find a way to change the axis mode for different columns in the dropdown. Any thoughts?

I would think you can solve this with an iron python script.
There is not a ready-made script for this, but you can find some examples with color coding on our iron python scripting article:
