How can you mask characters in an input field property control in a text area

I am trying to mask a password input in a text area with no success. I am attempting to follow the help in the link below, but it keeps on breaking as soon as I make any change to the text area. Are there any other ideas on how to accomplish this I have also tried basic HTMl, but it doesn't look like the Sportfire Property control works with it.

I am currently using Tibco Spotfire 10.7.
