    Tech Tips

A common issue for Spotfire users is that performance is degraded when accessing files in the Web Player. It's important to do some initial investigation to determine exactly what is causing the poor performance so that steps can be made to improve the situation.

For more details on these suggestions, please look through our Knowledge Base article on the subject:

Troubleshooting Performance issues on TIBCO Spotfire Web Player

Performance issues across TIBCO Spotfire Web Player environment:

First, examine the system resources on the Node Manager and the health status of the services in the Spotfire Server Monitoring & Diagnostics page. There are many factors that can be a bottleneck on performance and cause a service to be exhausted, but the most common are RAM and CPU.

    • Is the RAM consumption constantly or regularly above 85%? It is important to understand the memory requirements of the .dxp files you are loading on the Node Manager to ensure your server is properly sized. If you are loading reports that require more RAM than your Node Manager has, then the environment may be chronically exhausted and have performance issues.
    • Is the CPU usage regularly near 100% utilization? It?s not unexpected for CPU usage to occasionally spike when intensive operations are being performed (like opening an expensive .dxp file), but it should return to normal when those operations are completed.

If you see obvious resource bottlenecks, then those need to be addressed by either increasing resources (see

) or decreasing load on the Node Manager.

Performance issue on TIBCO Spotfire Web Player with specific dxps only:

In this situation, the slowness is only with a particular analysis file (or set of similar analysis files), and other analysis files do not exhibit any slowness. To test this, be sure to compare versions, data sources, calculated columns and scripts, custom extensions, clients (Analyst vs Web Player), and resources on the machines accessing the files. Compare dxp files that see the issue versus those that do not to highlight potential root causes.

It?s also important to determine exactly which action is slow. Is it slow to load, or during operations after the file has been opened, like switching tabs or rendering visualizations?
