Differences between Spotfire® Enterprise Runtime for R - Server Edition (the TERR Service), Spotfire® Service for Python, Spotfire® Service for R, and Spotfire® Statistics Services - Spotfire

If you have a license for Spotfire Statistics Services, then you also have a license for Spotfire Enterprise Runtime for R - Server Edition (the TERR Service), Spotfire Service for Python, and Spotfire Statistics Services, all of which are available for download.

Introduction

The license for Spotfire® Statistics Services includes licenses for the TERR Services, Spotfire Service for Python, and Spotfire Statistics Services. You can choose which of these tools to deploy in your Spotfire environment. This article provides information about their key differentiators.

Spotfire® Service for Python

Spotfire Service for Python runs on the node manager in the Spotfire architecture, just like the Web Player Service, Automation Services, or the TERR service.

Spotfire Service for Python on a node manager provides predictive and computational detail (through data functions written in Python) to users who access Spotfire visualizations through the Spotfire Business Author or Spotfire Consumer.

TERR Service:

The TERR Service runs on the node manager in the Spotfire architecture, just like the Web Player Service, Automation Services, or Spotfire Service for Python.

The TERR service on a node manager provides robust predictive and computational detail (through data functions or expression functions created using TERR) to users accessing Spotfire visualizations through the Spotfire Business Author or Spotfire Consumer.

Spotfire Statistics Services:

If Spotfire Analyst authors are using a statistical language other than TERR (that is, SAS® or MATLAB®), then you must have installed and configured Spotfire Statistics Services to work with that language in your Spotfire Server environment.

TSSS is also capable of running the TERR and R data functions and expression functions. This method was common earlier--before the availability of TERR Service and Spotfire Service for R--for running data functions or expression functions created using TERR or R.

Note: There will be no further new versions of Spotfire® Statistics Services server and it will eventually be removed. The latest LTS version, version 12.0.x, continues to receive bug fixes or security patches until End of Support is announced (expected about 2 years after release, around September of 2024).
