Step-by-Step
Step 1 - Download QGIS
You may download the latest version of QGIS here. For this tutorial, I use v2.18.
Step 2 - Add Image to QGIS
In QGIS, create a New Project and add your source image as Raster Layer
Step 3 - Add Shapefile
Add a Shapefile to your project. Each Shapefile can only contain points, lines, or polygons geometries, and you must specify which during the Shapefile creation. You also can add 'attributes' (columns of data to record) for the geometries:
Step 4 - Draw Geometries
Turn on the editing mode (pencil) and create new geometries as desired. Save attributes to those geometries.
Step 5 - Add .shp file to Spotfire
A Shapefile is a collection of several files. Drag-and-Drop the .shp file into Spotfire
Step 6 - Combine Shapefiles in a single map using Feature Layers
Each Shapefile is a separate Data Table in Spotfire and can be added to the same map using 'Feature Layers'
Step 7 - Adjust Coordinate Systems
The map itself and each Feature Layer should have 'Coordinate reference system' set to 'None'
Step 8 - Add Image Background
As a separate background, images can be added as a 'Image Layer'. Set the image 'Extents Settings'to X High = 0, Y High = 0, Y Low = -(your image vertical res), X Low= (your image horizontal res). Note that Y Low is a negative value.
